A Sense Of Wonder
Finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and making the most of language. A talk on poetry and fiction with Colette Olney
Wednesday 25 June 2008 at 6.15pm
Maryborough Hotel & Spa
As a special treat before the Summer break, Colette Olney will give a talk on poetry and fiction. Her focus will be on the craft of writing - getting started etc. As you know, Network is an organization for women in business, the professions and the Arts. The Arts is an integral part of life and belonging to everyone. Everyone samples forms of The Arts in daily life but knuckling in there and expressing one’s own self in whatever form - painting, writing, music, design etc - sometimes needs encouragement. Sometimes, the way needs to be lit up. Colette will talk to us on:
» Reasons to write
» Unblocking the block
» Learning to think (the writer’s way)
» What to write
» Approaches to literature
Colette is primarily a writer. She has won several poetry prizes (international) and teaches writing skills with the VEC and in Libraries. She has just completed a month of hosting writers groups in Bandon and Skibbereen as part of the Bealtaine festival.
She is a UCC graduate and has read her work in Dublin (with Poetry Ireland, at Temple Bar Print Gallery), Galway (at BKs and in Galway Library), at Strokestown (Co. Roscommon), in Kerry and Cork (Triskel). She teaches at Primary level occasionally (as a sub). She is a regular contributor to The Bandon Opinion and has worked with RTE local radio (1979 – 1986) as broadcaster, theatre critic and news and features.
She is now writing short stories and deeply immersed in the process. “...Art is not just ornamental, an enhancement of life, but a path in itself, a way out of the predictable and conventional, a map to self-discovery.” Gabrielle Roth
Members are invited to bring along a friend to partake in this meeting. Ideally the person will be someone who isn’t currently a member of Network but is an ideal candidate to benefit from membership.
Remember to bring plenty of business cards! |
